Kitchen Program

Our Kitchen Program provides students in Years 3–6 with a hands-on learning experience each fortnight, combining practical life skills with key curriculum outcomes in an engaging and supportive environment.

During each session, students prepare a variety of recipes while developing important literacy and numeracy skills. They strengthen their literacy skills by reading recipes, following step-by-step instructions and learning key kitchen terminology. At the same time, they build numeracy skills through accurate measuring, counting, weighing and calculating.

Beyond the curriculum connections, the Kitchen Program encourages teamwork, communication and social development. Students work together to complete cooking tasks, share responsibilities and support one another throughout the lesson. At the end of each session, they come together around the table to enjoy the food they have prepared.

Where possible, fresh seasonal produce is used in our recipes, including ingredients grown in our own school garden beds. We also use eggs from our school chickens, helping students make meaningful connections between gardening, food preparation and healthy eating.

Students are taught safe food preparation practices, age-appropriate cutting techniques and the importance of maintaining a clean and organised workspace. Through these routines, they develop responsibility, independence, confidence and problem-solving skills in a practical, real-world learning environment.

Each term concludes with an exciting Challenge Week, where students complete a series of cooking tasks and challenges. This gives them the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the term in a fun and purposeful way.
