A message from our Numeracy Specialist, Peter Buultjens

At Dorset Primary School, we assist students to grow into confident, capable mathematical thinkers using a curriculum that is carefully scaffolded from one year to the next. We deliberately weave the four proficiencies—Understanding, Fluency, Problem-Solving, and Reasoning—into all mathematic experiences. Our classroom is a supportive environment where embracing challenge is the norm, not the exception. By constantly linking what we learn to real-life scenarios, we make sure students see the practical value in maths, giving them the essential skills they need for life beyond the classroom.

The four proficiencies

Understanding, Fluency, Problem-Solving, and Reasoning are integrated through our carefully planned lessons. This ensures they are consistently reflected in the learning structure created by our teachers and in the mathematical thinking demonstrated by our students.
  • We Are Hands-On
  • At Dorset Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality teaching and learning in mathematics.
  • We take the time to teach well.
  • We are guided by assessment.
  • We achieve high standards by developing well-rounded mathematicians.
  • Our books and learning tasks are set to a high standard.
  • Worded examples and active learning are evident in every classroom

What a Lesson Looks Like

  • We begin with whole-class number work, including skip counting, pattern spotting, maths games, and hands-on activities. We show students how the skills they are learning can be directly applied in real-life situations.
  • Our teaching follows the gradual release of responsibility model:
  • I do: The teacher demonstrates.
  • We do: The class works together.
  • You do: Students practise independently.
  • Students practise skills or strategies using hands-on materials, then reflect on their learning by asking questions, explaining their understanding in their own words, or sharing strategies with a partner.

Each week, we dedicate 5 hours to mathematics:

In Foundation – Year 2;

  • 3 lessons focussing on number skills.
  • 1 lesson covering Algebra, Measurement, Space or Statistics, with number skills integrated.
  • 1 lesson focuses on solving worded problems.

In Years 3 – 6;

  • 2 lessons focus on number skills.
  • 2 lessons covering Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics or Probability, with number skills integrated.
  • 1 lesson focuses on solving real-world problems.

At Dorset, we ensure every child experiences success in mathematics through engaging, meaningful and differentiated learning opportunities.
