Maths at Dorset
A message from our Numeracy Specialist, Daniel Sullivan:
At Dorset, we create an environment where our students believe in their ability to succeed in mathematics. We teach them essential numeracy skills and design learning tasks that enable students to apply number strategies flexibly to solve problems. We encourage our students to be thoughtful, precise, and active decision-makers who can justify their thinking and choices clearly. Every student is supported and challenged to become a lifelong learner with a genuine appreciation for mathematics!
We focus heavily on the 4 proficiencies identified in the curriculum:
- We Are Hands-On
- At Dorset Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality teaching and learning in mathematics.
- We take the time to teach well.
- We are guided by assessment.
- We achieve high standards by developing well-rounded mathematicians.
- Our books and learning tasks are set to a high standard.
- Worded examples and active learning are evident in every classroom
What a Lesson Looks Like
- We begin with whole-class number work, including skip counting, pattern spotting, maths games, and hands-on activities. We show students how the skills they are learning can be directly applied in real-life situations.
- Our teaching follows the gradual release of responsibility model:
- I do: The teacher demonstrates.
- We do: The class works together.
- You do: Students practise independently.
- Students practise skills or strategies using hands-on materials, then reflect on their learning by asking questions, explaining their understanding in their own words, or sharing strategies with a partner.
Each week, we dedicate 5 hours to mathematics:
- 2 lessons focus on number skills.
- 2 lessons cover shape, measurement, statistics, and probability, with number skills integrated.
- 1 lesson focuses on solving real-world problems.
- At Dorset, we ensure every child experiences success in mathematics through engaging, structured, and meaningful learning opportunities.
